The Hippo

THE STORY BEHIND THIS PHOTO

What better way to soak up the feeling of being in Africa than a sunset cruise on the mighty Chobe River in Botswana! That’s what Mary and I experienced the minute we landed, it was a magical African adventure.

For hours we photographed the incredible birdlife along the river (a testament to the region’s biodiversity) and then came across Mary’s favourite animal - the hippo.

Hippos are known for their territorial behaviour and can be quite protective, especially when their young are nearby, as was this one. The moment when one of the hippos jumped fully out of the water to convey a message of caution was both exhilarating and a little nerve-wracking.

Having an experienced driver who could react quickly and ensure our safety was invaluable in such situations, and it underscores the importance of knowledgeable guides when exploring the African wilderness.

This photograph of the hippo as it descended back into the water after its leap will be a treasured memory of a unique and adventurous encounter with one of Africa's iconic animals. It's moments like these that make African safaris and wildlife photography so special.
