There’s no doubt artwork in the hallway can be impressive and very much needed. But beware - we often don’t pause to admire artwork in the hallway. Hallways often take us from the entrance to the living room and kitchen at the back. They’re a thoroughfare.

So I wouldn’t advise putting your most prized artwork in the hallway. However a long hallway without artwork can look bare and lacking.

I like the idea of having smaller artworks in a series. This leads your eye down the hallway and can tell a story as you move down towards the back. Series of 3 or 5 artworks in a row, all the same size, are perfect.

Make sure they aren’t big pieces. Hallways are generally narrow and you’re close to the artwork. You don’t want large artworks that have you backing back into the neighbours house.

The ideal viewing distance of an artwork is twice its diagonal length. With that in mind, the artwork in most hallways should be our 60 x 40cms size. The ideal distance to view these is about 120cms away. Most hallways will allow this.
