Squirrel monkeys are the ultimate tiny troublemakers of Costa Rica’s rainforests apparently and it’s hard not to fall in love with their playful antics. With their expressive faces, bright orange fur, and long tails, they look like they leaped straight out of a cartoon. Found mostly in Costa Rica’s Pacific lowlands, these little dynamos are always on the move, leaping through the treetops with acrobatic flair.

In fact, they’re so light and agile that they can hop from branch to branch with the grace of a jungle gymnast! Squirrel monkeys are highly social creatures, traveling in troops of up to 50 or more, however we found a group of 8.

We found a group of these in the forest today as they totally ignore us and went about their fun and games. But they move super quickly so it was hard to get a clean shot!

One of the most charming things about squirrel monkeys is their curious and mischievous nature. They’re always investigating their surroundings, poking around for fruits, insects, or even the occasional small lizard. Despite their playful personalities, squirrel monkeys are critical to the ecosystem, acting as tiny gardeners by dispersing seeds throughout the forest.
