King Vulture #3, Costa Rica

Sale priceAUD$340.00

The King Vulture is the royalty of the scavenger world, and with its colorful, almost clown-like face, it certainly makes a statement. Found in the tropical forests of Central and South America, including here in Costa Rica, this vulture is no ordinary carrion eater. Its bald head is adorned with vibrant splashes of orange, yellow, and red, making it look more like an avant-garde art project than a bird of prey.
But don’t let its fancy appearance fool you—this is one tough customer. With a wingspan of up to 6.5 feet, the King Vulture soars high above the canopy, scanning for its next meal. When it lands at a carcass, smaller vultures scatter, knowing the King is about to feast.
What makes the King Vulture even more fascinating is its role as nature’s cleanup crew. These scavengers are vital to the ecosystem, disposing of dead animals and preventing the spread of disease. They even have a knack for tearing through tough hides that other vultures can’t manage, making them the go-to bird when nature serves up its toughest leftovers.
While they might look a bit intimidating up close, we had the pleasure of spending several hours at close range with these majestic creatures.
Mary described this as the ugliest bird ever! What do you think?? I love them! That beak!!
