Keel-billed Toucan #2, Costa Rica
These guys are just so WOW! OMG I want one!!! They’re practically perfect in every way. Just look at those colours of the rainbow on the bill, that large inquisitive eye and the splash of lemon down the breast!
The Keel-billed Toucan, often called the “flying rainbow,” is one of Costa Rica’s most iconic and colorful residents! With a beak that looks like it was painted by an artist, blending bright greens, blues, oranges, and reds, this bird is the ultimate showstopper of the rainforest. Despite its enormous beak, which can be up to one-third of its body length, the toucan is surprisingly light and agile, thanks to the beak’s hollow structure. You’ll often spot them perched in trees, tossing fruit into their mouths like pros or hopping around with a comical, almost cartoonish charm.
But it’s not just their looks that make them special—Keel-billed Toucans have a personality to match! They’re social creatures, often found in small flocks, chattering with their distinctive croaking calls that sound a bit like a frog. When they’re not feasting on fruit, they’re goofing around, playing with twigs, or simply showing off their acrobatics as they maneuver through the canopy. These vibrant birds are a true symbol of Costa Rica’s lush biodiversity and a must-see for any nature lover!
