Back in 2005 I longed to shoot Cradle Mountain in winter. I hadn’t seen many shots of the mountain and surrounds with a good dump of snow on it so I planned a trip in August hoping for some bad weather.
Meeting with a friend in Hobart the day before, he warned of some bad weather approaching and suggested I get up there straight away otherwise I might find the road closed!
Leaving early, I made my way to Cradle only to find my fuel low and yet seeing on the map that there were plenty of towns along the way to fill up. Not at 5am in the morning though!!! Getting closer and closer, and getting lower and lower on fuel, snow started falling from the sky and my trusty 2WD was not made for snowy roads!!!
Climbing up the steep road with limit fuel, I crawled into Moina and found the road closed, cars waiting to getting through but thankfully fuel (but only accepting cash of which I had just $20!!! So I ‘filled up’ and waited. After an hour or so the snow plough came through but they were only allowing 4WDs. It was time for me to network! I spoke to one car with space – they were working on the refurbishment of rooms at the Cradle Mountain Lodge, and after describing my predicament, he offered a lift in exchange for a print!
Arriving at the visitors centre with snow still bucketing down, I ventured out in the snow and set up my camera. Least I thought I did. As I placed my heavy panoramic camera on the tripod, I turned to get something more out of my camera bag only to hear my camera drop to the ground, smashing the $450 centre spot filter and dampening my spirits completely!
With the sun soon shining and the roads drying out, I though I was a chance to get my car in providing an easier way to get around rather than walking (it was 9kms from my accommodation to mountain!). I returned to the visitors centre looking for my next lift, only to recognize an athlete I photographed in some obscure race from my sports photography days. I introduced myself, made it sound like he should know me and asked what he was doing here. Repping for a national outdoor company, he was meeting with the parks people to potential stock their products before driving back to Hobart. Perfect! I had a lift but he said I may have to wait several hours til his meeting finished. I was willing to wait and I saw this as my only chance to get my car, so I waited and he kindly drove me back to my car, by which stage the sun was out and the roads were open to 2WDs.
It was actually pointless me getting my car in the end, as it bucketed down with snow for the next 2 days. The road to the mountain was closed and I was forced to rise at 4am and walk two hours into the national park for my ‘sunrise’ shot, only to find it clouded in and blowing a gale! I spent the next 48 hours walking back and forth, hoping my spectacular snow image but to no avail. The wind and heavy cloud prevented me from seeing any of the mountain and despite my best efforts, my hopes were dashed!
To be honest, we prefer to ship artwork to you framed (of course, unframed prints work best when ordering from outside Australia). We believe in quality, framed artwork delivered directly to your door and ready to hang. That's service. No more finding a framer, wondering if you’re paying too much, painfully choosing from myriad of frame options then waiting weeks for the job to be done.
- We use only the best quality materials to ensure your print will look amazing and last forever.
- We have just 3 frames to choose from - raw oak, black or white. That’s it.
- Our shadow box framing is stylish and contemporary. We’re sure it will look smashing in your home or office.
- The deep frame has the print sit out from the wall to give it substance and style.
- Your print is printed on archival quality papers with archival inks, ensuring your print won’t fade or wrinkle.
- Your Tom Putt Print comes digitally signed and a small title is added to the left hand corner.
- The sizes on the website are for the overall print size - which includes the frame and the digital matt (a white border is added to the print rather than a traditional matt board).
- We STRONGLY recommend that your artwork be supplied with special non-reflective ArtGlass which means that you can see the beautiful artwork, not the distracting reflection from normal glass. Contact us to discuss this further.
