The first Dromana Pier was built in 1862, and after an extension to about 500m in 1873, it was the second longest pier in Port Phillip Bay. This was originally a place for steam ferries around the bay to berth rather than being a pleasure pier. Those ferries brought thousands to Dromana looking for rest and recreation. Dromana Pier was also used for loading and delivering freight and market produce. Today it’s enjoyed by locals all year round. In summer, kids love jumping from it. For me, I was interested in capturing the beauty of this icon. I chose winter for the soft afternoon light to illuminate the structure. The direction of the light needed to be perfect. With a cold wind blowing on my face, I waited patiently. As the clouds drifted across the sky, I thought my opportunity had gone. But alias, in the final minute before sunset, the sun broke through to produce this golden glow.
