The Bison, Yellowstone NP
Yellowstone National Park is indeed renowned for its remarkable wildlife, and the bison, often referred to as the gentle giants of the landscape, are among the park's iconic species. My mission to photograph these incredible creatures highlights both the thrill and responsibility that come with wildlife photography.
The strict regulations in place for approaching and interacting with wildlife in Yellowstone are crucial for both the safety of visitors and the well-being of the animals. It's important to maintain a respectful and safe distance to avoid disturbing or stressing them.
This mission would entail passing them in the vehicle, jumping out feverishly and lying on the snowy road for the best angle and waiting for them to arrive. As the bison entered the ideal photography zone - just 10m or less from us - my camera fired feverishly as I looked to capture their beauty before hastily retreating to the safety of the vehicle!
The juxtaposition of the close encounter with these majestic animals and the need to swiftly retreat to the safety of the vehicle highlights the balance that wildlife photographers must strike between getting the shot and respecting the animals and their environment. It's a thrilling and rewarding pursuit that also comes with a sense of responsibility to preserve and protect the wild places and creatures we seek to capture.
