Gunnamatta Surfers, Mornington Peninsula, VIC

The Peninsula has a number of surf breaks. Gunnamatta is one of the best with its distinctive sets and wash that makes for great photography.

Don’t be fooled by it’s looks. Gunnamatta Beach is an exposed, high energy beach with a wide, rip dominated surf zone. It averages 113 rescues each year as numerous rips carry swimmers outwards.

On this warm summer’s day, I chartered a light plane from Tyabb Airport. Each time I want to shoot aerials on the Peninsula, the chief pilots take me up for the best experience. Flying low over the ocean at 150km/h is a rush . But when you’re trying to take photos, 150km/h is FAST! We must have doubled back three times to get this shot!
