DATE: 30th November to 7th December 2021
BEST PHOTOS: EPIC DUNE LANDSCAPES
Experience the rugged beauty of Death Valley on this 8 day photographic adventure. You'll be standing atop of mountains with soaring vistas, trek through pristine sand dunes, photography towering canyon walls and gaze upon otherwordly colours and textures.
I'm SO EXCITED to be offering this workshop for the FIRST TIME to my participants. We've teamed up with an expert photographic guide from the South West that knows Death Valley intimately - you're in for a special treat!
The exact itinerary will be kept flexible to account for the weather and current conditions in the park. We will optimize our time for the best possible photography. The itinerary below is just an example of what you can expect.
Day 1 (Nov 30): Meet at 6PM in Las Vegas, NV for our Meet and Greet and group dinner.
Day 2 (Dec 1): Optional sunrise shoot on Vegas Strip. After breakfast we do the 2.5 hr drive to Furnace Creek. Check-in isn’t until 4PM so we’ll have to leave luggage at the lobby. After lunch we go out to the Mesquite Dunes and explore them through sunset. This will require 1-2 miles of walking. Overnight at The Oasis at Death Valley
Day 3 (Dec 2): With nice clouds in the sky, we wake up early to photograph the salt polygons at Badwater. We venture further afield to colorful badlands and slot canyons. In the afternoon we photograph old cars, waterfalls, joshua trees, ghost towns, and finish at sunset with Badwater Basin stretched out below us. We decide to stay a couple hours after sunset to do some night photography!
Day 4 (Dec 3): We photograph sunrise at nearby Zabriskie Point and then head out towards Eureka Dunes (2.5 hr drive). We have a picnic lunch and spend the afternoon exploring and photographing the largest sand dunes in Death Valley. We’ll be walking 1-2 miles. After dark, we’ll drive the 2.5 hrs back to Furnace Creek.
Day 5 (Dec 4): It's another early morning departure for a sunrise shoot. With dramatic clouds, we shoot from a high ridgeline with 360-degree views all around us! We get many different kinds of shots from wide angle up to telephoto. We return for lunch and an afternoon classroom session. We decide on our sunset location based on the weather.
Day 6 (Dec 5): We are up well before dawn to hike back into the Mesquite Dunes for sunrise, capturing the ripples, curves, and textures of the dunes. Again, this will be a 1-2 mile walk over loose terrain. We return to Furnace Creek for a midday break. This evening we go out to photograph the famous mud cracks of Death Valley.
Day 7 (Dec 6): Our morning photo session takes place amidst otherworldly badlands, full of striking colors and abstract shapes. The early morning light creates a wonderful glow and richness. We return for breakfast and then spend the rest of the day exploring a ghost town and driving through a huge canyon with towering walls. We even find a group of bighorn sheep to photograph!
Day 8 (Dec 7): We decide as a group where we want to spend our last sunrise opportunity in Death Valley. We return to Furnace Creek and check out of the hotel no later than 11AM. We eat lunch in Pahrump, NV and return to Las Vegas by mid-afternoon.
Hi I'm Tom Putt and I'll be leading you on this AMAZING Death Valley Photo Workshop.
A little bit more about me - I am passionate and wildly enthusiastic about photography, having spent the last 20 years exploring all parts of Australia to photograph landscapes.
I first fell in love with photography at age 13. I photographed wildlife, following my love for ornithology, before leaving university to pursue a career in sports photography. In 1998, I was fortunate enough to take the eye of Australia's leading sports photography agency, Sport the Library. From 1998 to 2001, I covered over 300 events across Australia and the world, including the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
But my passion has always been in landscape photography. My first shoot was walking the Overland Track in 1997. Since then, I have travelled extensively across Australia to capture the beauty of this great land.
I am a Master of Photography and have won over 100 Awards in both International and National Competitions. In 2014, I was awarded the International Landscape Photographer of the Year Runner-up.
