Rawson Pass Snowy Mountains, NSW

For many years I've travelled to Cradle Mountain to conduct photographic workshops. Occasionally it's snowed and at other times I've gone specifically to photograph the snow.
With a collection of snow images coming together, I've decided to publish a book on the snow regions of Australia — in Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales. To many tourists, Australia is Bondi Beach, Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef. Many don't realise that we get snow in Australia each year, I've discovered.
With this project in mind, I travelled up to the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales in August 2012 for the first time, about seven hours' drive from my place and home to Australia's top 10 mountain peaks. Now don't get thinking that Australia has mountains as such — they're pimples on the landscape compared to the Andes, Himalaya and the French Alps. However, they do receive a decent amount of snow each year.
This image was taken on night two of my trip, just below the summit of Mount Kosciuszko, Australia's highest peak, at Rawson's Pass. Arriving around midday, I decided this is where I wanted to shoot at sunset, so I set up camp and waited. Around sunset, thick cloud rolled in across the mountains from the west and I thought my sunset was ruined. Trekking off to the east, I shot a few frames before the cloud disappeared completely within minutes.
With only a few minutes till sunset, I raced up the steep icy slope of Mount Kosi to shoot sunset and revel in the fact that I was the only person for miles, standing on the top of Australia.
Climbing back down to my camp, I looked to the north and saw those smooth, snow-covered mountains in the distance — a rare sight in Australia as most of our snow peaks have snow gums. With a long exposure, I captured this image before darkness fell.
