El Questro Waterfall, The Kimberley, Western Australia

Size Guide

El Questro Gorge is one of the best one day walks in Australia.

It’s extremely picturesque at the right times of day, challenging with difficult terrain to negotiate, and several gorgeous rock pools to cool off in the intense heat of the day.

I’d spent two weeks exploring the Gibb River Road with my dad when we experienced mechanical issues with our car towards the end. We limped into El Questro Station to access the damage and stay for a few days to work our problems out. On one of these days, dad dropped me off at the entrance to the gorge, giving me a full day to explore and photograph.

The walk starts by walking through the reeds of the creek, then opening up to a steep orange cliff on one side with tall Livistonia Palms growing up from the forest floor. Taking a right hand turn after 30 mins or so, the gorge narrows, and the walk becomes an exercise in rock hopping up the creek.

On the northern wall, green ferns cover the cliff face as high up as you can see. After 1.4kms, you reach the Half Way Pool – which is not even half way!!! This is a great spot to go for a swim and cool off. This is where most people turn around too as a large boulder and deep rock pool prevents most people from going any further. To get beyond this, you need to take off your shoes and prepared to get wet up to your chest as you walk through the pool to he left, then jimmy your way with your legs and hands spread either side of the boulder and rock face to get over the rise to the left. It’s easy if you know what you’re doing!!

Beyond here the walk is very technical. Small coloured squares stuck to boulders along with flagging tape tied to trees mark the way however they’re not always easy to find. The boulders become larger and the track steeper as it continues for another two kilometres before reaching the small rock pool at the end. The walk the perfect recipe for a twisted ankle or broken leg!

Once reaching the end, this stunning rock pool, only 10m or so in length, provides a welcome relief from the heat.
