Slovenia Photography Workshop
DATES: 30th January to 7th February 2021
DEPOSIT OF AUD$2000 to secure your place is available.
Join us on this incredible winter photography adventure as we explore breathtaking alpine scenes around Slovenia. Using Lake Bled and the Triglav National Park as our base, we’ll get you to all the best spots to explore and capture snowy mountain peaks, turquoise rivers, frozen waterfalls, glacial lakes and frosted hilltop churches. At this time of year, the light is good all day; sunrises come later and sunsets earlier so we aim to capture both every day.
One of the exciting aspects of this workshop is the challenge posed by the weather, which can be changeable and means that we could be photographing in bright, clear conditions or battling snow blizzards. We’ll focus on camera manipulation adapted to winter conditions and will keep a flexible itinerary to capture the best the weather brings us. You’ll be able to try your hand at creative compositions using tripods and long exposure techniques. If the skies are clear we’ll also try some star trail photography from a mountain plateau. During the winter evenings we’ll retreat to our warm and comfortable accommodation to review our shoot and discuss post processing.
DAY 1 Arrival day to Slovenia
Arrive in Ljubljana airport and transfer to Bled. The adventure starts with an afternoon shoot to capture ‘golden light’ at iconic lake Bled. Evening get-together for a welcome dinner and to discuss plans for the tour.
DAY 2 - 5 Lakes Bled and Bohinj, Triglav National Park and Ljubljana
We’ll take 4 full days to explore the beautiful Gorenjska region starting with a sunrise shoot at the shore of Lake Bled. From Bled Castle perched up on the cliff top we’ll capture superb panoramas of the lake with its island and Baroque church. Visit the spectacular Vintgar Gorge the perfect location to experiment with capturing fast-flowing water and try out some long exposures. Our second glacial lake is Bohinj and has a very different feel. Here we’ll take time to practice composition skills at the lake shore and capture creative reflections. A short drive takes us to the surrounding picturesque villages where you’ll have the opportunity to capture traditional agricultural architecture including the landmark hayracks of Slovenia, as well as scenes of rural village life. Cap off the evenings with a sunset shoot at the lakeside.
Our route will also take us to the Soca River Valley to explore more of the Triglav National Park. Capture the incredible emerald waters of the Soca and discover gorges and waterfalls as we hike along the riverbanks. As well as capturing stunning landscapes, we may be lucky with some wildlife photography and will also take the opportunity to photograph the historical World War I remnants along the trail. Our route will take us on an exciting tour of some of highest mountains in Slovenia offering incredible views across Slovenia and into Italy.
We will take a day trip to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia and a gem of a city. We will spend the day wandering the charming streets of the old city with camera in hand and capture the highlights of Ljubljana including baroque churches, diverse architectural details and the castle as well as trying our hand at some street photography and candid portraits in Ljubljana’s bustling marketplace and along the café-strewn riverbanks. We will drive back to our base on Bled in the evening.
DAY 6 Transfer Bled - Hallstatt
Morning photography at Lake Bled and breakfast. Today we leave Slovenia behind and drive to Austria. We will arrive to Hallstatt in time of sunset photography. Our first dinner at friendly B&B in Austria.
DAY 7 Hallstatt and surroundings
We will spend one day in, around and above Hallstatt. The iconic view of the Parish church reflecting in the lake will be on our agenda. We will also drive to some of the nearby waterfalls and springs to capture winter scenery - who knows - it might all be frozen or covered in snow. We will take gondola to one of the viewpoints high in Austrian Alps. An amazing experience where we are surrounded with snow covered mountains and rewarded with 360 views.
DAY 8 Hallstatt - Salzburg
Last opportunity for morning photography in Hallstatt. After breakfast we leave this picturesque town and head to Salzburg, the magnificent city on Salzach river. Walk around the old town and evening photography in the city. After a farewell dinner we will drive to our hotel.
