In March 2005, I attended a photography workshop at Charlotte’s Pass in the Snowy Mountains, home to Australia’s lowest recorded mainland temperature of -22 degrees celsius.
The day I arrived for the workshop, it was relatively balmy. However, a cool change swept through that night and by the morning the temperature had dropped to near zero.
Having some free time, I explored the forest behind the lodge, finding these fantastic ancient snow gums that had been there for centuries. With it lightly raining, the water dripped off the trunk, revealing the stunning variation in colours.
After an hour or so the cold became too much for my cold fingers so I retreated inside.
This image was Highly Commended in the 2005 BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, the only Australian entry to receive an award that year.
